Most people have no idea that an entirely different world exists in our seas and oceans and if you are planning a holiday in Dubai, you simply must get an introduction into the mysterious world of scuba diving. If you are conjuring up mental images of deep crevices and great white sharks, you can relax, as you would not be allowed to do any deep-water diving and you would have a guide with you at all times, who happens to be a professional scuba diving instructor.
Requirements to dive
In order to book a scuba diving course, you must be:
- Over 18 years of age
- A swimmer
- Healthy with no medical issues
When you book with a Fujairah diving centre, they provide everything that you will need, including:
- Diving gear
- Certified diving instructor
- Theory session
- Unlimited soft drinks and water
- Hotel pick up and drop off
You can start in a swimming pool if you would rather train breathing techniques in a safer environment, but when you are in the sea, you are always with an instructor; safety is obviously paramount when scuba diving.
Introductory diving course
This is perfect for the beginner who is a little apprehensive about entering the ocean; you can be trained in a controlled water environment, which is a good springboard to diving in shallow seas. If, on the other hand, you feel you are ready to explore the underwater world, you can enjoy a shallow water accompanied dive. This might take place on the boat or at the dive center and it involves learning how the breathing apparatus works. You need to know how to operate the equipment and a few safety aspects; this takes about 20-30 minutes.
What to pack
You should bring your swimwear and a towel; of course, you will need to present your passport when arriving at the dive centre in Fujairah. You should also bring your camera, and an underwater camera, if you have one. That’s really all you need to enjoy your first scuba diving experience.
This is very important, especially if you have fair skin; use a good sunscreen and you might want to wear a T-Shirt to protect your shoulders. Indeed, as soon as you arrive in Dubai, you should be aware that the sun is much stronger than in northern Europe. There are a lot of free resources online to educate you about UAE and the more you know about the history of this part of the world, the richer the experience will be.
Progressing through the levels
If you are going to be in Dubai for a few weeks, you should be able to experience a number of dives and maybe even get PADI or RAID certification.
You don’t have to wait until you arrive in UAE to book your scuba diving; simply Google ‘dive schools in Dubai’ and browse the list of diving schools and when you find one that ticks all the boxes, make a booking for your preferred dates.
